Post-Harvest Research and Product Development

Program Brief

In Tanzania, the lack of post-harvest infrastructure to control food loss and waste has exacerbated the food insecurity problem and negatively affecting farmers’ incomes and livelihoods. Many small-scale farmers waste up to 40% of what they produce because they lack facilities to keep their food products before sale.

In recognition of this problem, before we introduce our post-harvest products, we undertake research by speaking directly with farmers, food processors, vendors, and traders to understand their needs, establish the underlying cause of post-harvest food loss, and determine how our products will help them avoid such losses once adopted. This solution-focused approach and direct engagement with our end-users in product development have helped us develop products that respond to farmers’ concerns and needs.

Strategic Objective

To conduct innovative and evidence-based research to guide and influence the development of high-impact postharvest products, technologies, and solutions, helping small-scale farmers in Tanzania and Africa avoid food loss and waste.

Key Strategic Actions

  1. Conduct postharvest food loss assessments before and after the introduction of MAVUNOLAB solutions, products, and technologies to selected communities and target populations.
  2. Engage potential users and adopters of MAVUNOLAB postharvest solutions, products, and services in research, product development, and testing before the full deployment.
  3. Establish a monitoring and evaluation system to track the performance of postharvest products and technologies developed/deployed by MAVUNOLAB and its partners.
  4. Establish and collect data on the amount of food saved as a result of the introduction of MAVUNOLAB postharvest products, services, and technologies in Tanzania.
  5. Establish remote and online data collection systems to help MAVUNOLAB teams track, monitor, and respond to any problems with products and technologies deployed by its team and partners.
